Ie Fushimi

The IeFushimi

You feel Ie before you see it.

Ie Fushimi is a house of tea in an old Kyoto machiya near Fushimi Inari.

The house came first. Its timber, earth, wells, shadows and garden are not a backdrop — they are where we began.

The house was already speaking. We began by listening.

The House

Heavy beams cross under the underside of the roof. Daylight catches one edge.
01 — Looking upward

Beams cross beams. The underside of the old roof, exposed.

From a dark tatami room, through the glass doors, a stone lantern stands in the garden light.
02 — The garden at the centre

The garden is a room with the sky as its roof.

Sun through a wooden lattice lays bars of light across a paper screen.
A corridor beside an earthen wall; a vase and a low table in the half-light.
03 — Light

Morning finds one surface. Afternoon finds another. Shadow is also part of the room.

04 — Water

Two old wells remain. One will return to the garden. The other, to tea.

Old steps drop through an opening in the floor into darkness.
05 — Below the house

Some rooms are better found than announced.

[PHOTOGRAPH TO COME — the carpenter's ink inscriptions on the beams]
06 — What the timber remembers

A carpenter's ink, still legible.

[translation TO CONFIRM once the inscriptions are read and dated]

Three old rotary light switches on a plastered wall.
07 — Small things remain

People lived here. They turned these lights on at night.

Before we open the doors

What the house is becoming.

The front of the house on the street: a timber lattice above, the ground floor open and lit.
The front room, lit low, a pine on a stone plinth, the street beyond the glass.
The front room with people sitting over tea at low tables.
Three people talking on a low bench in a pale room.

Ie Atelier

Objects the house uses every day — commissioned, tested in the rooms, then made in small editions. Tea, ceramics, incense, copper, paper, light. Some made by the people who stay and work here. A way of carrying a piece of Ie home.

Collaborations

Ie is a house for residencies. We open its rooms to craftspeople, artists, brands and practitioners who want to work slowly and in depth.

Work with the house →

The water is warming.

The garden is growing.

The doors open in spring 2027.
